Blade Runner (1982)︎︎︎ established a concept for empathy detection technology through the fictional Voight-Kampff machine. This conceptual device addressed a delicate issue in society with technology becoming more ubiquitous with time. What if emotions could be understood by technology? What’s more, could you empathise with your devices at some point? ChallengesWhat would a plausible imagining of a Voight-Kampff machine or similar human computer empathic-interaction be like? Could it be imagined in a way where it were scalable and mundane? MethodologyResearch through Design Speculative Design Human Centred Design Research &amp; ContributionThese questions drove the core research into the Creating and Exploring Digital Empathy Project (CEDE) at Lancaster︎︎︎. Among the different speculative explorations of this project was my contribution as the Empathy Engine. Forming the central artefact of my Master’s dissertation︎, it explored the possibility of a near future where a Voight-Kampff-esque machine exists; both positive and negative implications. How can an empathic-interaction be digitally translated into a device?What form(s) could this device exist in?What are the consequences of such technology?How distant a future are we considering here? To speculate on this concept elements of mundanity became an important incorporation for building the fictional future world. Two science fiction movies beside Bladerunner became the focus of empirical research to understand perspectives of empathy envisioned through HCI. First Spike Jones’ Romance/Sci-fi Her (2013)︎︎︎ placed itself in a near-distant future eerily relatable to contemporary smart assistants presenting a human bond with technology. Equally second, GERTY the AI from Duncan Jones’ Moon (2009)︎︎︎ showed an AI's compassion towards a human user’s never ending plight in a dystopian future on the Moon.What set these visions apart were their acknowledgment of mundanity. The resulting fictions explore a concept for Human Computer Empathic-Interaction based on an SDK deployable on a variety of devices allowing data collection, analysis, and open access Designing FictionsVarious usage scenarios as diegetic prototypes were designed the most prominent being a doctor-patient interaction case scenario as example. An illustrated manual for a fictional device called the DoPER Nano (Doctor Patient Empathic Receiver) was imagined. Wider PerspectivesA more consumer example was imagined in the SDK being deployed in vehicles to give a comforting unique driving experience. The software would learn from the user and become much like a personal assistant, aware of the users mood and usage suggesting routes to better fit their current state of mind.Finally, two video design fictions were imaged. One involved a live setting usage for the SDK as a dating app that establishes the user's current mood through software and hardware analysis. The other presented the core software itself as a fictional crowd funding campaign. Imagining the Empathy Engine through a live setting dating app scenario. To do this in a manner that removed any possible biases it was explored as a kickstarter campaign virally marketed on social media platforms particularly Reddit where it garnered the most attention.Among the feedback from publics experiencing the artefact first hand were the expected doubts for such technology to be feasable, but there were also those that played along and added to the fiction/world with their own dystopian imaginings.Perhaps the most compelling though was an email from a filmaker eager to document the process of making the SDK! The product was to be launched on a tight deadline in incremental stages and included a full platform of media interaction. The final product allowed users to experience live TV and their own media content through its Android-based custom interface. As a first of its kind to be desiged and delivered in-house from Pakistan, the design had to be unique, eye catching, and functional enough to match the standards at the time. ChallengesDesign a unique TV experience for the Pakistani market.Platform had to be scalable to incorporate the different TV models planned ahead. ApproachUI/UXExperience DesignSystems DesignUser Testing BackgroundSince 1957 Orient has been providing innovative solutions to the Pakistani market as home appliances and electronics. Having a long history in pioneering new technologies in Pakistan they were among the first to introduce IoT-based home appliances in the country. It only made sense for them to move into Smart TV’s. After the onboarding and initial client discussion it was understood that Orient were basing their vision of Smart TV’s off of thencompetitor provided solutions. ProcessThis was the first project of its size and kind that I worked on and understandably it required research into not only the client and user needs, but also the system to be designed for. This project required an understanding of systems architecture for AndroidTV which the platform would be based upon. Second, a series of detailed wireframes were done to imagine the different setups possible in this TV/Entertainment System. We called it an entertainment system because it had to allow for more than just TV experience becoming the central hub for your home as future plans by Orient were to incorporate social media, sports interactions, games, and interaction with their other Smart Home appliances. Deliverable: Entertainment SystemThe design then went into an iterative process of making the system aesthetically pleasing. This had to be done in tandem with the development team which was busy making the design live on the platform. In the end the final Smart TV experience was designed to include a number of services for end-users within an all in one entertainment system experience. These included a TV dashboard, social media interactions, TV guide, music and photo library, file manager, future app support, appliance network, video player, and a backend system for handling system wide settings and support. The system was designed over a panel interface making the design modular and interchangable with different elements. This allowed the experience to feel seamless throughout the different sections of the Smart TV. Process As they provided for a buzzing talent market in Dubai they needed a system that could make it easier for prospective clients such as television studios and producers to be able to sift through their catalog with ease. The design was done in two stages, first client requirements were understood and the different data points used in talent management systems laid out. This gave an idea for the scope of the design along with its accompanying back-end. Pages were designed to be modular with components reusable for different kinds of data. Hugging walls and fences, rummaging through woods and running across shores. Let me take you on a walk, a walk through history, through time and souls. To places where life is bustling and others where the dust of gloom has settled as the norm. Let me tell you how the land has faces of its own, how it echoes its tale and sings a song secretly known.” Water“I stand on the sandy shores of Morecambe, a gray drizzle in the air as drops of water embrace the ocean far away. There is a constant change in the waves, new water coming in older moving on. There is a change in cities and settings that build along the waves, new constructions, new destructions. People come and go, they are born and they die.”“Morecambe’s famous days of tourism are a shadow of its past, but water keeps this place alive reminding it of its movement; of its change. I stand on the canal, an image of busy ships carrying heavy loads across industrial times.” “Wandering there now it’s a place of calm and comfort, of walking your dog and appreciating the harmonious landscape. In the grime of ages an old stone bridge still stands, the water still flows.” Weather“They say time flows like water. I traveled across time zones to Lancaster, to find it a magical place. I was so happy to get a room facing the east, imagining the first ray of morning sunshine on my bed. But looking through my window, it constantly jumps from one picture to the next. Four seasons coupled in a frame one after the other. Clouds like makeup on the sky. Winds that can easily blow me in tears. Naughty hail trying to draw my attention, noisy as it falls around.”“A rainy day gives me enough reasons to curl up in bed and read a book, but sometimes it seems worthwhile when a rainbow pops out.” “It is very special of Lancaster to have so many ups and downs, these variations symbolic movements announcing of change in the air every day.” People “On a usual weekday morning along the canal, I keep walking till I reach the end of a long queue awaiting the bus. The busiest moments in this living breathing city are on its narrow veins; its roads. The city is alive with this rush in its veins, at times it is still but the queues keep moving. These lines if not at the bus stop are seen at cash machines and, cafes, and bakeries.” “There are vibrations in the city of all the people walking, sitting, jogging, running, shopping, working, at times arguing other times playing. People of all ages, a changing spectrum of colors on a canvas of stone.”“ Elderly and young, the people move not just physically but in other ways. Sometimes enjoying the scenery, other times discussing which flavor of crisps are better to choose from?”“These vibrations are everywhere clearly felt. Walking along the canal I see people moving, passing each other by. They slightly nod as if to say “Yes, I feel it too”. Nature“Standing in Lancaster I look around and often have the same thought echo in my mind, ‘This is an old city!’”“I see buildings that are old, roads that are old, people that are old.” “People here are not interested in what’s modern, or perhaps they are but would rather not? The city seems to be built through time, stretching between points keepings things alive. It does certainly feel like they try to make things as old as they can. Each brick or stone is different in colour, shape and size yet they are all fit where they should.”“But stepping out I see similar shapes and forms replicating nature almost, are they trying to duplicate natures perfection? Are they avoiding change? Yet still there is a gradient to this stoney city.” “By the beach I’m not attracted to the water, or the sand but to the stone that makes this place what it is. A combination of black and green, taking from nature its true artistic forms. If Lancaster is created by this artist of nature then surely all things must be as alive?” Chaos “Time is elastic, it stretches and bends cavorting with the space it's in. I sometimes imagine time as the distance between the moth and the flame, at times so massive as the moth dances around, and then suddenly drops singeing a few microscopic hairs on its own wings.”“For that brisk moment and instant the flame, distance and the moth all become one, time becomes infinite. Stretching as far as oblivion where everything is at once beautiful and accursed, calm and chaotic. Everything becomes of interest because everything enters a state of sense. But at what price?” “The flame becomes the moment, a haunting reminder of the volatile nature of things. I’ve painted a picture if what I call a gentle kind of chaos, where moments play the key roles in giving it definition. It's a cloud in the landscape at once soft and comforting and then rabid and violent.” “It's a nature often found in cities. They have a personality like any average person, some grand, others grotesque, some romantic others hideous. These cities are the characters of this play—the moths around the flame—the difference being they've danced their inevitable dance and have crossed the threshold.”“These cities live in the silence of what can only be called, history. Lancaster speaks volumes of a past made in trade invoking a history of innovation amidst a veil of slavery. There are moments it can't remember and others it can't forget. A chaotic battle rages on in this silence, invisible till you place an ear to the cobblestones. You sense vibrations of glory days, of magnificent and majestic mechanical elephants, of sailors and their trades, of art, of culture, of violence, injustice and evolution.”“Lancaster's essence is many things, but above all it is the fact that it has a gentle kind of chaos, a silhouette in the hills. It has a certain movement, through change, through vibrations, through the people that reside in it and through the many faces it shows in the weather. The tale of Lancaster the city had to be told as poetically as the city itself, its essence translated into experiential senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound. A City’s essence in a boxEach box is crafted out of locally sourced Ash, the grain left intact the scent of wood retained. Within each section of the artefact is a piece of Lancaster to be experienced. Glass coated images to be held up to the sun, the scent of the sea and the smells of the city, a taste of locally sourced fish, and the sounds of the city captured. As part of the team designing for social entrepreneurship within the defined co-working space of Halton Mill, this project aimed to be the basis for inspiration into the enhancement/improvement of the co-working environment present at the time at Halton Mill. The month long project involved a series of stages of exploration and analysis to understand client and community needs and offer varied term solutions for co-working in the Lancashire countryside. ChallengesHow can the co-working experience provided by Halton Mill be improved?Establishing long and short term objectives and goals to increase Halton Mill’s contribution to community and returns on investment. MethodologyResearch through DesignService DesignHuman Centred DesignCo-Design Background Co-working spaces are shared workspaces that can provide potential benefits in an uncertain economy. They are spaces where telecommuters, freelancers, and others without a regular office can anchor their workday providing them a professional environment from which to conduct business. Halton Mill is a co-working facility in the village of Halton, Lancaster, near the river Lune. A project of Lancaster Cohousing and managed by the&nbsp;Green Elephant initiative,&nbsp;they provide a number of services related to co-working from rentable spaces and tenancy options to desk space available for temporary or permanent use. Phase 1 To begin the project of compiling a potential business solution for Halton Mill a primary investigation was conducted to observe the workings and structure of the facility. In addition, in order to learn from other co-working concepts different case studies of established models were explored. ObservationsResearch began with us observing the Mill and its tenants. Throughout several visits we realised the space to be quiet, inactive, and dim. Limited lighting in the corridors and a homebrewed sustainable aesthetic gave off a stagnant vibe. Furthermore, because of the geographical location very few people were aware of the Mill. The facility had a boxed in layout ideal for manufacturing or storage, though not necessarily ideal for most co-working setups. This became apparent after further case study research. Case StudiesTo have a point of reference for designing Halton several case studies were explored from established co-working setups to fresh start-ups. Though we accept that interactions with digital objects happen on the Internet, what exactly does that even mean? Where is the Internet? What kinds of interactions are these and what are their requirements? Furthermore, the only way we do any of this is by encountering non-digital objects like smart phones and laptops. Approaching these questions required dissecting digital and non-digital worlds towards making a spatial understanding encompassing the two. Explored through a philosophical lens of viewing digital spaces as experiential phenomenon for digital objects similar to the phenomenon of experience for non-digitals like ourselves and our world, this research unwraps IoT as if peeking through a metaphorical looking glass. ChallengesUnderstanding parameters that define interactions within IoT. Expanding on present established workings of IoT as spatial configurations. Establishing a phenomenological foundation for encounters with IoT. MethodologyResearch through Design Speculative Design Object Oriented Philosophy Philosophical Carpentry Background Humans are social animals, we interact with not just people but also objects around us. Many of these interactions occur in multiple spaces—ones that have been defined over generations of meticulous arrangements. We move in and out of these ‘spaces’ as we navigate through our daily lives of interactions and encounters. Some spaces are very straightforward and have universal understandings such as a bedroom or a bathroom. But others are more fluid in nature, like the space within the pages of a notebook, or that within our thoughts. What’s more is many of these spaces exist within each other, and can even be influenced by their containers. This research began as an exploration in alternative modalities of thought towards the adoption of IoT1 specifically the spaces that create IoT, to understand what factors affect the presence of IoT for consumers. At the time early research into object-oriented-ness for design research was underway at Lancaster and as a thought experiment an object-oriented perspective was imagined in this instance. What if these objects of the Internet operated in their own capacity within the spaces they acknowledged as relating to their existence? Much like how as a human I understand the nuances of public and private spaces, what if these objects of the Internet did the same? “The Internet does not exist…Because it has no shape. It has no face, just this name that describes everything and nothing at the same time.”2 The truth is that the Internet does not truly exist as a singular location, rather it is multiple points in an infinitely plottable existence; ironically not dissimilar to the expanding universe we occupy. Though the existential argument of the Internet-as-illusion similar to our reality-as-illusion is compelling, this research needed to focus on establishing how the Internet as a phenomenological space for digital objects may exist. The starting point being understanding what are these digital objects that create the many locations and points in the constellation of an otherwise shapeless Internet. Constellations in a shapeless Internet Since the Internet is not one singular place rather multiple locations coming together, thus our interactions within the Internet do not exist in a singular instance either. They are intercepted by factors out of our reach. Take for instance the humble smart home meter designed to simplify our lives by bringing at ease any horrors of central heating in the home. When you use a smart meter the immediate understanding is that you are controlling the heating in the house. In truth it is a much more complex arrangement being established. The heating is not in the house but coming from external providers, as is the electricity, and the Wi-Fi. The smart meter itself is not physically interacting with the heating elements of your house, it’s talking with other objects that might be. This talking is happening in the shapeless ether of the Internet but requires multiple hand-shakes with the established complex arrangements that make up that specific smart meter, in that specific setting of a home, in that specific location on the globe. These are agreements between stakeholders like your ISP, utility companies, the many servers the smart meter needs to interact with, laws of countries these interactions move through which it must obey, and so on. <img width="2467" height="1052" width_o="2467" height_o="1052" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c4622bf1b683efea91d8a4080dc2554bf25c02c78f169bf54476099552950ff7/ch3-constellation.png" data-mid="110416450" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c4622bf1b683efea91d8a4080dc2554bf25c02c78f169bf54476099552950ff7/ch3-constellation.png" />Our interactions with IoT is not necessarily as we assume, many interactions require further interdependent relationships to be formed. It is a constellation of interactions existing as independent but interdependent relationships3 which for the most part remain unknown to us as users. Granted many of these interactions might not be of interest to us but some may, such as when digital objects decide to share our data without our consent. Just what are the agreements made between the different stakeholders after all? From a design standpoint these interactions and arrangements are imagined from a human perspective, but the interactions occurring here are not with the human in mind. They are with ISP, private companies, or governments in mind. Furthermore, as a user your understanding remains a 1-1 relationship between yourself and the smart object. So how can design take into account this non-human perspective occurring within the Internet? Philosophically speaking To understand this alternative perspective this research explored Object-Oriented Ontology creating a phenomenologically parallel world to our own by working off established models of phenomenology.4 This approach is then augmented with a concept of heterotopias from Michel Foucault’s writings,5 to create an understanding of spaces within spaces existing with their own rules. <img width="1538" height="1286" width_o="1538" height_o="1286" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/328327439a881fd58a810464bd8def131ec623f64a9c346ffd501942aa629e84/ch7-digitalfourfold.png" data-mid="110416440" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/328327439a881fd58a810464bd8def131ec623f64a9c346ffd501942aa629e84/ch7-digitalfourfold.png" />By expanding on Harman’s four-fold model we establish a philosophical basis for digital phenomenology. These spaces relate to each other. Take the space of a mirror image, it exists because there is something in the space in front of the mirror. Similarly the space occupied by the voice-on-the-phone exists because, somewhere, a person speaks into a telephone handset. Neither space can exist without the other, but they don’t always play nicely together. These interlinked spaces have their unique sets of rules and properties, and Foucault asked questions to try and understand what these are. For example, what is allowed to be experienced in a space and in what order, what circumstances dictate these experiences, and, most importantly, who gets to decide on all this? Let’s imagine a museum. When you step inside there are rules that you must abide by; sometimes no photographs, no loud noises, etc. The museum allows you access to one sort of space, but the museum heterotopia also denies you access to another sort. Museum heterotopias don’t just manipulate space, but, in a sense, they twist time too. By providing a physical space for artefacts from the past, they create temporal illusions and transport the artefacts of the past into the audiences of the present. The timeless trinkets we see in museums create heterotopic rules that break up our understandings of space; although museums are public places, they allow for very private interactions between you, the artefacts, and other visitors in the space. A Spatial Model for IoT Technologies that work with objects of the Internet such as IoT have created a whole range of new heterotopias. Consider the smartphone, the text conversations you have, phone calls you make, and emails you send at first glance might appear to fit with commonly held conceptions of private spaces. However, if we consider that any message on your phone can be shared with anyone else through a screenshot the nature of this ‘private’ space changes. Similar arguments around mediated publics7 come from the notion that social media complicates and blurs audiences and ideas of publicness affording alterations to public engagement within those spaces. In order to navigate these mediated spaces we must alter our behaviours allowing new controls and skills to form. The overlapping of digital/non-digital spaces and versions of private/public realities within them create unique heterotopias within them, each defining a new phenomenological reality. Amidst it all lies the interaction of our smart meters, jumping between heterotopia to heterotopia to converse with other objects of the Internet. The framework established in this way approaches a similar construct by suggesting phenomenological object-spaces for digital objects and their interactions. These spaces are mediated just like social networks because through the object-oriented lens an object-geography is imagined. A social context collapse of digital/non-digital objects and their digital/non-digital spaces. To the digital objects the non-digital objects exist as equal to them on a level plane afforded by OOO. Because of this our interactions and the ways in which we must navigate them as both designers and user should be reimagined in favour of more meaningful design choices. The project explored women's changing relationship with protest, power, and place to highlight powerful stories of resistance that inspire change. Major ContributionTasked alongside Yujia Huang︎︎︎ to curate collected data throughout the project for an exhibition in the Millennium Gallery Sheffield︎︎︎, this work required a close attention to understanding the best means for visualising such a large amount of data alongside wayfinding in the provided space. As research assistants we curated this exhibit and designed supporting material based off or using the collected research material and artefacts from the project. Protest Walk As this exhibit was intended to highlight the sense of power and place a large part of the experience was designing a larger than life protest walk. All images used throughout the curation was from collected resources during the project. The protest walk was printed on perforated fabric and hung at the entrance, visitors were encouraged to be part of the protest and walk along/through the fabric protestors. Interactivity Along with the timeline interactive elements were incorporated into the exhibition. The project required a means to present hours of oral histories that were collected as part of the research. To do this interactive points were designed as tablet applications with purpose built housings. These audio points brought about a means for visitors to hear first hand from the activists their experiences and their lives. These oral histories are presented as part of the projects Virtual Museum︎︎︎ experience.
